Greetings to all HSE Advisors and future HSE Advisors that are reading my article.
I have wrote this few lines with the intention to make a more clear picture of what trainings would be required to advance your carrier as a HSE Advisor, and more especially in the offshore industry.
I am in this branch for more then 17 years, and I can tell you that working as an Offshore HSE Advisor requires a specific combination of medical certification, offshore survival training, industry familiarisation courses, and professional health and safety qualifications. The requirements are classified as general – for all offshore personnel, and here we can refer to the medical fitness certificates, BOSIET/ HUET/ FOET, etc., and the rest of them presented here are specifically for the HSE professionals.
As we know the offshore installations operate in demanding environments where workers are exposed to hazards such as helicopter transport, heavy lifting operations, confined spaces, pressurised systems, weather, subsea operations, DP and hydrocarbon risks.
Because of these conditions, every Offshore HSE Advisor must complete a structured training pathway that ensures they are capable of managing safety systems, performing risk assessments, investigating incidents, and protecting personnel working in offshore oil and gas operations.
Besides the details about the trainings, you will get here as well the average training costs in Euro, in order to have an estimated budget for your professional path.
Mandatory Offshore Certification Requirements
Basic Offshore HSE Training for Familiarisation
Many companies require new offshore personnel to complete Basic Offshore HSE Familiarisation Training before mobilising offshore. This course introduces workers to the operational environment and safety culture used in offshore oil and gas installations.
It is particularly useful for HSE professionals who are transitioning from onshore industries.
Typical training topics include:
- Introduction to offshore oil and gas operations
- Offshore installation safety zones
- Hazard identification offshore
- Permit to Work systems
- Isolation procedures (LOTO)
- Personal protective equipment requirements
- Environmental protection offshore
- Emergency response procedures
Duration: 1-2 days
Typical cost: €250 – €500
Validity: Usually no expiration
Offshore Medical Requirements
Before attending offshore courses or traveling offshore, all offshore workers must hold a valid offshore medical certificate.
The most widely accepted certification is the OGUK / OEUK Offshore Medical.
The medical examination confirms that personnel are physically and mentally fit to work in remote offshore environments where emergency evacuation may take time.
The medical fitness assessment typically includes:
- Physical examination
- Vision and hearing tests
- Lung function testing
- Blood pressure assessment
- Urinalysis
- Drug and alcohol screening
At the end you will get you MFC with the note – Fit for Duty (Offshore), or if there where any notes you will receive – Fit for Duty with Treatment.
In case you fail the medical fitness examination, this must be repeated, after following the recommendations of the doctors.
The final report, you will submit to your company for registration and evidences.
Cost: €120 – €200
Validity: 2 years (in some situations can be only 1 year)
Duration: about 30-60 minutes
OPITO BOSIET and CA-EBS Training
The Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) is the primary offshore survival training required for all offshore workers.

This training prepares personnel to respond to emergencies such as fires, helicopter incidents, and abandonment of offshore installations.
Typical course modules include:
- Offshore safety induction
- Helicopter safety procedures
- Sea survival techniques
- Fire prevention and firefighting
- Lifeboat evacuation procedures
- Emergency breathing systems
Duration: 3 days
Validity: 4 years
Cost: €900 – €1400
OPITO HUET Training
The Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) prepares offshore workers to escape safely from a helicopter that has ditched into the sea. This is normally part of the BOSIET training.
Since helicopters are the primary transportation method to offshore installations, this training is essential for any offshore worker.
Training exercises include:
- Escape from a submerged helicopter simulator
- Underwater orientation drills
- Emergency breathing system use
- Seatbelt release techniques underwater
Duration: 1 day (usually included in BOSIET)
Validity: 4 years
Cost: €400 – €700
FOET Refresher Training for BOSIET
The Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) is required to renew BOSIET certification prior to expire. Normally you must enrol to FOET within a month of the BOET expiration, otherwise you MUST repeat all BOSIET training.
Duration: 1 day
Validity: 4 years
Cost: €500 – €800

ONLY FOR WIND FARMS – GWO Trainings
In offshore wind projects and renewable energy installations, Global Wind Organisation (GWO) training is often required in addition to traditional offshore oil and gas survival training. Personnel working in offshore wind farms must hold valid GWO certifications to ensure they are prepared for the specific hazards associated with wind turbine installations.
The GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) standard was developed by the Global Wind Organisation to improve safety and emergency preparedness for personnel working in the wind energy sector.
The training usually consists of several safety modules:
GWO Working at Heights
This module teaches personnel how to safely work and rescue workers at height within wind turbine structures.
Topics include:

Total Cost to Become an Offshore HSE Advisor
The total investment required to become a qualified Offshore HSE Advisor usually ranges between:
€15000 – €25000 AHHHHHHHH!!!!!
The amount sound huge and discouraging on the first instance, however you don’t need to have all the above trainings at once, you can get them in time while accumulating experience.
The general offshore trainings are mandatory and without them you cannot start any work offshore – are not negotiable, are required by law.
The role of an Offshore HSE Advisor is essential for maintaining safety standards in offshore oil and gas operations. These professionals are responsible for ensuring compliance with safety regulations, conducting investigations, managing risks, and protecting workers in challenging offshore environments.
The combination of offshore survival training, professional safety qualifications, and practical experience ensures that the Offshore HSE Advisor can effectively support safe offshore operations.
